This page is dedicated to the Best of Our Best. You'll occasionally find some
very unique feeders and sometimes feeders utilizing unique lumber.
Either way, you'll love what's here and we encourage you to
check back now and again to see what's new.
Currently:
A year ago we had the great fortune to purchase some true Honduran Mahogany salvaged from the boat building industry in Massachusetts. We've been building the
most beautiful mahogany feeders imaginable but it is nearly gone and it's
highly unlikely we'll be getting anymore anytime soon.
Mahogany weathers like no other and will last for decades with
little or no maintenance. This particular supply of mahogany is the finest we've ever seen. In the lumber industry it called grade "A" Clear Vertical Grain lumber. Meaning, it has no knots and the grain is near perfectly straight. We expect these feeders to last for literally decades and to take it one step further, each has been treated with our Penetrating Oil Finish for an unequalled beginning.
Black Walnut!! Must I say more? Black walnut is one of my personal favorites and it builds into an awesome feeder. It's beauty is second to none and the black walnut we currently have is a special order produced at the mill just for us. We are ordering more but it is unlikely we'll have any other walnut feeders until very late in the year.
Black Cherry: We always have a good supply of Black Cherry but the difference in the feeders offered here is they have been allowed to "age" into their darker red coloring. Black cherry darkens as it sits on the shelf and it takes many months of patience on our part to allow this phenomenon to take place since the feeders must have the finish applied before the darkening begins. Otherwise, sanding takes it back to square one.
Here's an example of a Signature Series Feeder. I built this beautiful Black Walnut Mourning Dove and Ornamental Pole Mount in September 2004 and it sold in four days. The customer who purchased this feeder still compliments it each time we speak to her.
Ultimately, she added a Black Walnut Seed Catcher Tray to complete this one of a kind feeding station.
We Craft Furniture For Your Feathered and Furry Friends
Our Current Offerings, April 25, 2007
This Signature Series Ultra Mourning Dove in Mahogany is sure to sell quickly. We highly doubt there's an equal anywhere in the country and Pete had a hard time letting it go. His wife wanted it erected in front of their home but Pete said "16 feeders are enough Honey, this one's finding a new home with one of our Customers."
Fear not. We DID NOT cut down the rain forest for this feeder. It's salvaged Honduran Mahogany from the boat building industry in New England. We love exotic lumber but not that much. We'll keep looking for salvage lumber before we ever cut rare trees.
We have not built a mount for this feeder, yet. We are waiting to see what our Customer wishes to do first. This feeder is being offered less any mount, as you see it, or with our Large Ornamental Pole Mount that fits a standard 4 x 4 post. This feeder is very heavy and requires a stronger mount than our Standard Large Mount.
This feeder holds approximately 3 1/2 gallons (15 pounds) of seed and the roof measures 29" long and 15" wide. It's overall height is nearly 12". For a size comparison, the binoculars are Bushnell 10x40's.

Magnum Hanging Finch Feeders: S/N's - 21070 and 21071
These two Signature Magnum Finch Feeders are absolutely wonderful. Each feeder holds 11 pounds of Niger Seed (Thistle Seed) and has 14 perches to feed the whole flock.
If you're extremely serious about feeding finches, here's a feeder for you. Both are handcrafted from real Honduran Mahogany and solid oak perches. These two feeders will live for decades and would make an awesome gift.
These feeders are 34" tall and each roof is 8" x 10". For those who already have one of our finch feeders, no explanation is required. We go to great lengths to craft the finest, strongest and most beautiful finch feeder available. They are one of our best selling feeders and for good reason. Strongly built for decades of use, properly sized to suit finches and the seed slots are cut so precisely, very little seed goes to waste.
These two feeders are being offered singularly or as a pair. Give one to Mom for Mother's Day and keep one for yourself. OR Put one away and wait for Father's Day and give Dad the second one. Mom and Dad will have a perfectly matched set that will be together for years, just like them.
Check out this CRAZY Tiger Stripe Grained Red Oak Finch Feeder!!!! When Pete and Tom were building Deer Feeders one day, they came across this wild piece of oak. Immediately, Pete knew this was NOT deer feeder lumber and set it aside. Recently, it came to him. "What a CRAZY finch feeder this will make!" and here it is.
Holding 4 1/2 pounds of Niger Seed (thistle seed) and having 12 perches, this feeder is destined for finch heaven. It's been sanded to gallery quality and double dipped in our Penetrating Oil Finish. This will make your favorite finch fan extremely happy.
Each of our Signature Series feeders is a special feeder that was crafted from our finest or most unusual materials. We poured all of our knowledge of craftsmanship into each to produce the best of our best.
We do not build a large quantity of these feeders due to time constraints and because of this, each feeder is offered and sold on a first come first serve basis. The feeders pictured below are now being enjoyed at their new homes.
If you find a feeder you cannot live without, we recommend you place your order immediately. Our customers have gotten use to the fact these feeders sell quickly and once gone, will not be offered again.
Ultra Mourning Dove
in Black Walnut with
Ornamental Pole Mount.
This Signature Series Ultra Mourning Dove in Black Walnut was one of my all time favorite feeders to build. The grain is incredible and the pictures do it no justice.
One of the truly fun aspects of this feeder is the vertical side of the hopper, pictured at left top. This side was crafted in such a way that the seed port was bored through a knot giving this port a very "natural" look. There's even a slight crack in the knot adding even more character.
The Ornamental Pole Mount is a true "Thing of Beauty" all unto itself. See the wild grain pattern in this piece. It goes from near perfect black to cream white that's set off by the brass screws and an oak mount-to-feeder attaching plate.
This feeder's hopper will easily hold 16 pounds of black oil sunflower seed plus another pound or two pounds on the platform. Your birds will think they died and went to heaven. Even I wish my dinning room table was this nice!
The overall size is 29" in length, 14 1/2" in width and 16" tall, including the mount. Ships in one box, the mount will be removed for shipping and is easy to reinstall.

Mourning Dove with Ornamental Pole Mount in Mahogany.
What more can be said. A Mourning Dove in Mahogany with Jatoba (Brazillian Cherry) railings. Mahogany makes for a wonderfully beautiful feeder that will last for decades. Jatoba railings were installed on this feeder for two very specific reasons. One, they are absolutely gourgeous. Two, it's the hardest wood we've even used. Meaning, the mahogany of this feeder will withstand the weather for decades. Jatoba railings will too AND withstand the physical abuse from the bird's talons over this time period.
I also crafted a second feeder exactly like this one. They are both based off our Mourning Dove but have been "tweaked" to make true one-off feeders, except there's a pair of them. It would please me to no end to see both of them go to one home or one family. They would make a perfect match in an upscale garden environment or be a beautiful set to share with a loved one. Each feeder is 24" in length, 15" in width and 14" in height. Each holds 10 to 12 pounds of seed.

Here is the longest (tallest I guess) finch feeder I've ever crafted and it was done using a single piece of black walnut. It has 16 perches and holds approximately 5 pounds of Niger seed (thistle seed). Just picture 16 bright yellow American Gold Finches or Pine Siskins in summer plumage feeding from this beautiful feeder.
There is nothing more to say except, I almost kept this one for myself and still might but there is already 14 feeders surrounding the offices now.
This feeder measured 36 in long (tall) and has a roof 6" wide and 5 1/2" long. Each perch is red oak and secured in place with a solid brass screw.
It would make a great gift or a special treat for yourself.
Just some cool Finch Feeders in Black Walnut,
Black Cherry and Mahogany.
For those of you who have met us at shows or visited our shop, you've seen many of our hardwood feeder in person. The finch feeders shown here are very special and we're now sharing them with the rest of the country. The black walnut feeder has some real wild grain patterns is certainly a very beautiful feeder. The black cherry feeder was one I've allowed to sit on the shelf to age into its dark red phase before adding a second coat of finish. Mahogany is well......mahogany - gorgeous.
Well, that's it for April 2007. I hope you've enjoyed seeing the best of our best. I've enjoyed crafting these awesome feeders and know you'll enjoy them for many years.
Please drop a note now and again telling us how your birds like them.
Thanks for shopping with us. I wish you a good day and Good Birding.
Sincerely,
Peter Hurley
The cutest of cute now comes in mahogany. I adore this feeder and I know you will too.

Suet Feeders like a Hurley-Byrd Suet Feeder exist nowhere else. They are our number one selling feeder at every show we attend and for good reason. They are unique and the birds LOVE the feel under their feet. Wire cages are so unnatural to our feathered friends and once they grasp the oak dowels, they decide to stay.
What is being offered here are 6 Black Walnut and 7 Mahogany Suet Feeders. Once the mahogany ones are sold, they will not be produced again.
