She came to us three years ago explaining how she used our ever popular Deer Feeder as a spring and summer garden planter. Two years ago she asked about a "few large, square boxes that held more soil?"
Being Hurley-Byrd, that was no issue and the first Free Standing Garden Planter was born.
Miriam ordered four Large Garden Planters and told us they
were "gifts to all the Mothers in her life." We thought that was a fantastic idea.
Hurley-Byrd introduced the Garden Planter last year at Mother's
Day and will now be a permanent item.

What's a Free Standing Garden Planter?
A Free Standing Garden Planter is a unique garden planter.
Perfect for spring annuals like Pansies, Lobelia, Snaps and more.
An excellent container as a kitchen garden planter filled with Rosemary, Oregano and Basil.
The uses are endless. Just imagine this 36" long planter filled to the brim with large Fuchsias blooming heavily and swarming with hummingbirds. This is a beautiful and unique planter.
How Big is a Free Standing Garden Planter?
We offer two sizes this year. Each is 36" long 7" or 9" wide and both stand 24" high for easy watering.
The Standard has a soil capacity of 12 1/2 quarts, just perfect for small annuals and
the Large with its 24 quart capacity is excellent for larger plants wanting extra rooting area.
Both planters set on a pair of Free Standing Legs so it can be
placed nearly anywhere with a flat and level surface.
Each comes with an earth spiking kit of four spikes to anchor the feet when needed. (Not for hard surfaces.)
How well made are they and are they easy to assemble?
Like Hurley-Byrd's wildlife feeders, we craft the Garden Planters with premium quality western red cedar.
In the Large Garden Planter, the ends of the box are crafted from Appalachian hardwood for extra
strength and durability. Like all Hurley-Byrd products, these planter are crafted using solid brass screws throughout for years of dependability. Each planter receives our penetrating oil finish to enhance
the wood's characteristics and to help preserve and protect from the elements.
Assembly is very simple. The box arrives complete and ready for use. The feet (which swivel to fit the
lay of the land) are attached to the legs with one screw and each leg is attached to the box
using two carriage bolts and wingnuts for easy assemble and disassembly for storage.
Does it drain properly and is it easy to maintain?
Yes on both questions. We added plenty of drainage holes throughout the bottom board plus the base simply lays in the bottom of the box. This in itself allows a little drainage but more importantly, allows for super easy emptying and cleaning at season's end. Pull the base board out, scrub the box clean and allow to dry. If desired, apply a fresh coat of penetrating oil stain to retain its color or allow the whole planter to age into its beautiful silver gray. To store for the winter, disassemble the legs from the box, detach the feet and everything stores away in the box. Nice, simple and clean. It just doesn't get any better!
